Once under French control, Algeria was considered an integral part of France, with tens of thousands of Europeans emigrating there. The French would sieze control of Algiers in 1830 and lead a military conquest of the rest of Algeria that would last until 1848. It was during this period that England, France and Spain each lost thousands of merchant ships and captured slaves to pirates of the infamous Barbary Coast. Islam was introduced by Arabs in the mid-7th century.ĭuring the early part of the 16th century coastal areas of Algeria fell under control of the Spanish Empire, but most of these settlements (including Algiers) were later lost to the Ottomans and from 1517 until 1830 Algeria was considered part of the Ottoman Empire. Nomadic Berbers have made up a significant percentage of the population for thousands of years, and several Berber dynasties ruled much of the land during the Middle Ages. In antiquity the land was known as Numidia, later part of the Carthaginian, Roman, and Byzantine empires.

Again, I’m not angry at how it turned out, it was just different than I expected. It seems like Green can have major-secondary characters and minor-secondary characters and I’d expected Daisy to land in the latter category at first. I also didn’t expect Daisy to play as big a role as she did. I like that Green found a way to balance this. From the summary, I thought the plot was going to focus on the Picketts more. I wasn’t expecting Aza’s illness to come into the story the way it did. There were parts of this book that I wasn’t expecting. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.
